A year in the life of a tree surgeon

Timing is everything when it comes to tree surgery, and here at Shelford Tree Service we run to a strict schedule throughout the year.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is key for us as the weather turns, the nights draw in and most trees are dormant and bare. This allows us to have clear sight of each tree’s branch structure and therefore to plan and execute precise cuts. In addition, wounds heal more effectively while the tree’s dormant, and there’s a reduced risk of harmful insects or pathogens being attracted. Winter surgery is especially good for fruit trees because this period precedes active spring growth and can therefore lead to heavier cropping. That said, we avoid aggressive trimming during periods of low temperatures and deep frost as damage can be caused to branches, which slows down recovery time.

Spring (March – May)

As the temperatures begin to rise, we have to tread carefully when it comes to tree surgery. The majority of trees will cope well with treatment, but we avoid, for example, birch, maple, and walnut trees during these months because they heavily leak sap and this can harm the tree. We use the spring to assess and remedy any storm damage incurred during the winter and plan ahead for our summer maintenance programmes. Crown cleaning can be helpful during the spring to make way for the summer growing season.

Summer (June – August)

The summertime is when trees experience most growth, so as tree surgeons we have to be especially careful. We try to avoid the hottest times of day when repairing storm damage or trimming back failing branches as wound repair can be affected, and we also keep a close eye on trees that have had summer surgery to ensure that they’re handling the stress of that activity.

Autumn (September – November)

As we move through autumn, fuller leaf cover allows us to assess trees’ health, point out any potential issues and plan any remedial work that will be needed in the winter. We can also prune younger trees to prepare them for being dormant over the winter months. We’re especially busy with commercial clients in the autumn as we carry out tree audits and preparatory work before the winter storms roll in.
