How to prepare for a site clearance

When conducting a site clearance, several factors must be considered to ensure the process is done safely and legally.

Before work can begin, a thorough assessment and clear plan are critical to managing the logistics surrounding tree and vegetation removal.

The first stage of this is conducting an initial survey of the site, which determines the scope of work, including but not limited to the size and types of trees and vegetation, as well as potential obstacles such as tree stumps or invasive species. The decision to remove a tree will be dependent on the project and whether it poses a structural and/or safety risk.

An environmental review must also be carried out, and this includes:

• Checking for active bird nests and any protected species.
• The time of year and how that affects nesting species.
• Checking for modifications that may need to be made to protect any protected species or habitats on the site area.

It is an offence to destroy active bird nests, and trees shouldn’t be removed when there are actively nesting birds/wildlife, so this is one reason why this step is crucial.

Tree felling is often best carried out in late autumn and winter when sap flow is reduced and fewer species are active. Seasonal timing can also affect disease spread, ground conditions and wildlife presence.

Site clearance works should follow BS5837:2012, which outlines how trees should be assessed and protected during construction. This ensures compliance with planning conditions and supports responsible development.

Checks regarding whether any permits are also required, as local regulations and the presence of protected trees or species may require these.

The final stage is to create a strategy, including a detailed plan of the specific equipment needed and the most efficient, economical and safest ways to clear the site whilst adhering to industry best practices.
