Pollarding is an ancient tree pruning method that creates a framework of bare scaffold branches with a gnarly knob at the end of each branch.
This technique is commonly used on Willow and Lime trees, it not only shapes the design of a tree but also enhances its appearance.
A tree's height is reduced by removing the top branches completely, encouraging new, healthy growth. A fresh pollard can look quite alarming, the tree is reduced to a suitable height and can look very naked. Once pollarded a tree will begin to regenerate shoots and continue to grow, after just one year it will be like a new tree. Trees are pollarded to help maintain their height and prevent them from getting too large for the surrounding area.
Future maintenance of the tree at this new lower height is often much easier making re-pollarding, if required, back to the same point much easier than the first time. Depending on the species, a tree should be pollarded again between 5 and 30 years.
